A half hour later, we were all in Miguel’s garage, this time with the door closed. Miguel’s dad wasn’t home, again. I’d asked Petey on the ride over where Miguel’s dad was all the time. He’d just shrugged and said, “He works a lot.”
I knew Nana was playing bingo at an amiga’s house tonight, and of course, my mom was working so I didn’t bother making it home for dinner. Tonight my dinner consisted of pepperoni pizza from Domino’s and Coca-Cola courtesy of Miguel.
And unfortunately a bonus contact high.
“You sure you guys don’t want any?” Rock stood in front of me and Beth as he sucked in a serious hit from a joint. He blew out a cloud of smoke straight into our faces. Derek and Mateo were playing Halo 2 on the Xbox and Petey was about to take his hit.
I waved a hand in front of my face and laughed, sitting on the couch with Beth on one side, Miguel on the other. “I’m sure, thanks.”
The light was on in the garage, the door closed to the house. No windows were open and I watched the smoke float around us.
Miguel had taken a couple of drags and was now smoking a cig. “Why don’t you guys burn it?”
I shrugged, trying not to look at him too much. Our kiss was pretty fresh in my mind. I wanted to act cool like he was—almost like the kiss never happened—but it was still hard to be all casual. “I tried it a couple of times and didn’t see what all the hype was about.” I looked at Beth.
“Angel’s not into it so I haven’t smoked in a while.”
I lifted my eyebrows. This was the first I’d heard I was basically holding her back. “If you want to, don’t let me stop you,” I said.
“Really?”
Why did she feel she needed my permission? “Go ahead.”
“Maybe you didn’t smoke it right or have good enough shit,” Miguel suggested to me.
“Could be.”
“So why not try again?”
I didn’t answer right away. Beth took the joint from Petey, placing it between her thumb and forefinger. She placed her lips around the paper, as if she was going to give it a kiss, and inhaled.
She pulled the joint away—her face looking all scrunched up—and blew out smoke. I thought she might have inhaled too much because she coughed as if she might puke.
“You okay, Beth?” I asked.
She nodded.
My eyes were starting to feel as if something was squeezing them. Funny, how do eyeballs feel tight? Apparently I really was experiencing a contact high. I looked at everyone else all smiles and kicking back and wondered why I had to be the outsider here. “I guess I’ll try some.”
“Cool,” Miguel said.
Beth giggled. The bud was already affecting her.
I took the small joint that was now the length of my thumbnail and studied it uncertainly.
Here goes.
